Same Love Wedding Day - The Ceremonies
February 10th was a monumental day in sweltering hot Brisbane. It was the day when, at long last, four loved-up couples were be able to (legally!!) say “I do” during the Same Love Wedding Day - a jam-packed event with petit ceremonies and celebrations for long-term same-sex couples who'd won a competition run by Whiz Bang Weddings Club.
Before the big day rolled around, the best in the ‘biz were crafting ceremony wording; compiling styling ideas; arranging floral designs; and baking elaborate cakes. Every vendor involved had generously donated their time and resources, so there was a shared sense of love, pride and passion in making this day perfect-as-could-be for these gorgeous and deserving couples. (Read here about how this idea started and see how preparations were made here!)
This special Saturday brought with it plenty of sunshine and an insane heatwave to boot! Wedding vendors started bright and early (fuelled by coffee, naturally) to bring the visions for all four celebrations to life and the air was positively electric. It was a day that I will truly never forget for two reasons...
Firstly and most importantly, seeing the smiles, happy tears and obvious over-flowing love from the couples and their family and friends was so incredibly touching and it struck me that years and years of fighting had FINALLY resulted in everyday Australians being able to legally tie the knot. The joy was palpable and by the time I left, I was a blubbering mess. Secondly, to be able to work with a group of devoted and like-minded professionals working towards a mission to bring happiness and throw these incredible couples cracker weddings was amazing. Every person there - photographers, celebrants, beauty specialists, stylists, decorators, creatives and helpers - seemed to be buzzing with excitement, anticipation and positive energy.
I'm thrilled to share my behind-the-scenes notes and gorgeous action shots taken by Daisy & The Duke. Keep scrolling to see how this love-filled event and all the weddings unfolded...
First off the block were Roanna and Rachel with a intimate elopement on the light-filled verandah, where they exchanged vows encircled by delicate flowers. Roanna wore a unique floral crown that was a perfect match for Rachel's bouquet. After they were pronounced wife and wife, they had pictures taken in Bonnie the vintage car and across the grounds of Hillstone, followed by a romantic picnic!
The second celebration of love was for Christian and Stephen (who were flanked by their three adorable sons). They all wore rainbow-inspired floral buttonholes and the boys wore bright vests in materials they'd chosen themselves. The grooms looked dashing, the tunes were happening (Rachel, their celebrant, sang Kylie Minogue songs matched to their love story - awww) and the heartfelt tears were flowing. After the ceremony, the lovebirds and their guests enjoyed ice-cream by the balloon-filled fountain before continuing on to a reception onsite at Hillstone.
It was then Tony and Rob's turn to tie the knot and they sure did it in style in the hidden courtyard - surrounded by plenty of greenery and adorned with multicoloured balloons. Not only did both of them look dapper in their vests and bow ties, but their fur-babies joined in and rocked bow ties for the special occasion too! After their (quite warm) wedding ceremony, everyone enjoyed delicious ice-cream - including the canine guests of honour.
Last but definitely not least, Dan and Ben married each other in a festival of rainbows and love, surrounded by their supporters and garlands of bright, vivid-coloured balloons. Their celebrant, Alana, wore a handmade pink and black sparkly tinsel vest and took great joy in officiating their marriage. The grooms wore outfits that were so sharp and stylish, they could have been gracing a catwalk, but nothing could match their happy smiles...
All of the elated couples celebrated their nuptials in different ways, but the best part was that they left the day officially married!
As for me - I could not stop myself from sharing a few happy tears when I had the privilege of watching the touching ceremony of Stephen and Christian. Just hearing Rachel say the new Commonwealth definition whereby it is "two people" who can marry, instead of a man and a woman, and seeing the overwhelming joy on theirs and their boys' faces when they finally tied the knot was too beautiful for words.
I’d like to say a massive, massive CONGRATULATIONS to the newlywed couples and also to every single one of the fantastic Brisbane wedding professionals who were involved - most especially the creative genius, Alana Salm, who envisioned, planned and ultimately nailed this day of celebrating (same) L-O-V-E. And, of course, thank you SO much to Daisy & The Duke for sharing these totally fabulous pictures with us!
