Talking Wedding Stationery with Beverley and York...

A little while ago I had the pleasure of having a lunchtime chat with Teri, the owner and designer of Beverley and York, a gorgeous custom wedding stationery company. Whether you are in the midst of planning your wedding or you are just a stationery lover (like me), this interview will be right up your alley.

Teri started her business to combine her two loves - graphic design and weddings - after she thoroughly enjoyed creating her own wedding invitations. She is based out of her studio in the Gold Coast Hinterland and works with couples both from Australia and around the globe. Beverley and York's designs are modern, fun and easily tailored to suit every couple's individual taste and style.

Before you read our interview, I have a secret to share... I am completely guilty of regularly lusting over Beverley and York's Instagram page and secretly want to hold a big event just so that I can order some stationery!

What’s your favourite aspect of working in the wedding industry?

It’s exciting for me because the people I am working with are really excited about what we’re working on. It’s so personal and that makes it more fun. It also inspires me to do a better job because it’s so important to my clients.

Can you tell us a little bit about your own big day and about creating the stationery?

I did my own wedding stationery, of course, and that was mainly because we had a very DIY wedding. It was very small and held at a winery in Kingaroy (for our international readers - this is a country town in Queensland, Australia). That was the first time that I did any wedding stationery and I really enjoyed it. That was what sparked my business and once I’d done it once, I wanted to do more and more.

What inspires you when you’re creating your designs?

I enjoy working with current wedding trends and find that couples are using those trends in other aspects of their day too. I'm also inspired by different colours and flowers.

Do you have a favourite design suite that you’ve worked on?

I love the simplicity of ‘Louisa’ but my favourite would be ‘Chloe’. (The 'Chloe' suite is pictured above and the 'Louisa' suite is shown below).

Do you have any advice for couples currently trying to choose their own wedding stationery?

It’s a good start if you already have your bridesmaid dresses or you've chosen a colour scheme. It's also a great idea to keep the styles the same - if you’re going for a vintage themed reception, it might be nice to have stationery that matches that. When you’re sending out your invitations, it gives your guests an idea of what your wedding will be like, so it could give them thoughts of what to wear or a glimpse into the theme that you have chosen.

When you start working with your customers, is a face to face meeting necessary or how does the process work?

I mainly communicate with customers over email, as the internet means face to face meetings aren't necessary. I also have an Etsy shop, so there are a couple of different ways to order and communicate with each other. There have been times when people have wanted something more specific or customised than the designs on our page, so they have sent me examples of styles or colours or a completely new and different idea they might have.

I love the fact that you work with your customers to create ‘one of a kind’ stationery. From what I’ve been seeing lately, that’s a trend that's here to stay. Apart from invites, what other items can couples order?

'Save The Dates' are really popular, as well as other cards that go with the invitation, such as RSVP cards and 'Wishing Well' cards. We also do ‘day of’ stationery, including menus, table numbers and wedding programs. I just did some really pretty wedding programs for a couple recently!

Just for fun - do you have a favourite TV character or celebrity wedding that you loved?

Do you know what wedding dress I really loved? It was in the Sex and the City movie where Carrie doesn’t actually get married. She’s got a beautiful hair piece.

Readers, what made you decide on your invitations and stationery? Did you choose it based on colour, theme or design? I'd love to hear from you in the comment section below.
